Residential School Mass Grave Recovery

Today marks one year since the mass grave recovery at a former Residential School site in Kamloops, British Columbia. Over the past year unmarked graves continue to be identified. To date, 16 former Residential School sites that have been investigated with ground-penetrating radar and 2,008 Indigenous peoples' graves have been recovered. This is only a small number of sites considering there were 139 Residential Schools in Canada between 1870 - 1996. Former Residential School sites in Ontario are starting to be investigated this year. 

We continue to mourn the loss of Indigenous peoples' lives as more unmarked graves at former residential school sites across Canada are documented by Indigenous communities. We are committed to learning about the truths of the genocide in Canada.
